La investigación, desarrollada en el área experimental DESAL+ LIVING LAB de Pozo Izquierdo (Gran Canaria), demuestra el potencial de la tecnología OARO para mejorar la gestión sostenible de la salmuera en la industria de la desalación de agua de mar


Personal investigador del Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias (ITC) ha publicado un nuevo artículo científico titulado Pilot-scale evaluation and optimization of osmotically assisted reverse osmosis (OARO) for concentrating real SWRO brine en la revista internacional de alto impacto Separation and Purification Technology (Elsevier), en el que se presentan los resultados de una investigación orientada a mejorar la gestión sostenible de la salmuera generada en las plantas desaladoras de agua de mar, con el fin último de reducir consumos, mejorar la eficiencia del proceso de concentración de dichas salmueras y abrir nuevas oportunidades de valorización de este excedente.

Este trabajo de investigación, liderado por el ITC, se desarrolla en el marco de la tesis doctoral de ámbito industrial de Ángel Rivero, ingeniero químico e investigador principal del estudio. Como coautores, intervienen Baltasar Peñate, doctor ingeniero industrial y responsable del departamento de Agua del ITC, y Yanira López, ingeniera química vinculada a proyectos internacionales de desalación y tratamiento de aguas. Asimismo, el trabajo está respaldado por la doctora Noemí Melián Martel, directora de la tesis y profesora de la Escuela de Ingenierías Industriales y Civiles (EIIC) de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).

La investigación se centra en el análisis, a escala piloto y en condiciones reales de operación, del rendimiento de una tecnología innovadora de ósmosis inversa asistida osmóticamente (OARO, por sus siglas en inglés) para concentrar salmuera procedente de procesos de desalación. Esta solución tecnológica se plantea como una alternativa óptima, al reducir el volumen de este vertido y, al mismo tiempo, favorecer la valorización de la salmuera como recurso, en línea con modelos basados en la economía circular aplicada al ciclo industrial del agua.

Los resultados obtenidos aportan conocimiento útil para uno de los objetivos estratégicos del ITC en el ámbito del agua: promover actualizaciones tecnológicas en plantas desaladoras que permitan mejorar la eficiencia energética, reducir la huella ambiental de las instalaciones y avanzar hacia modelos de gestión más sostenibles. Esta línea de investigación también contribuye a minimizar los vertidos de salmuera al mar, una cuestión especialmente relevante por su afección sobre el medio marino, al tiempo que impulsa nuevos usos para este excedente dentro de cadenas de valor de base industrial.

Validación en un entorno experimental único

El estudio experimental se desarrolló en el banco de ensayos para valorización de salmueras ubicado en las instalaciones del ITC en Pozo Izquierdo (Gran Canaria), integradas en el ecosistema científico-técnico del DESAL+ LIVING LAB. Este open test-bed, promovido conjuntamente por la Sociedad de Promoción Económica de Gran Canaria (SPEGC) y el ITC, constituye una infraestructura singular que facilita la validación de tecnologías avanzadas aplicadas a la desalación, y analizar el comportamiento de soluciones innovadoras antes de su posible aplicación a escala industrial.

En este contexto, se evaluó un sistema integrado de concentración de salmuera que combina una etapa inicial de preconcentración mediante ósmosis inversa convencional (OI) con varias etapas de OARO, utilizando salmuera real previamente tratada mediante nanofiltración (NF).

Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que esta tecnología logra alcanzar concentraciones de salmuera de hasta 245 gramos por litro, con niveles de recuperación de agua de entre el 72 % y el 85 %. En términos de eficiencia, el sistema registró consumos energéticos específicos de entre 7 y 14 kWh por metro cúbico de permeado producido, lo que confirma el potencial de la OARO como una tecnología escalable y energéticamente eficiente para su implementación en el sector de la desalación.

Canarias como espacio de referencia para la innovación en el sector del agua

La gestión de las salmueras generadas por las plantas desaladoras constituye uno de los principales retos ambientales y operativos del sector. En este contexto, la investigación liderada por el ITC contribuye a avanzar hacia modelos de desalación más sostenibles, en los que los efluentes de salmueras puedan transformarse en materias primas para usos industriales o para la recuperación de minerales y compuestos de valor.

El ITC, a través de su departamento de I+D aplicada al ciclo del agua, trabaja en el desarrollo de soluciones innovadoras orientadas a optimizar el consumo energético, reducir la huella ambiental y fomentar la economía circular en el sector del agua, contribuyendo a dar respuesta a los retos globales relacionados con la escasez de agua y la gestión eficiente de los recursos hídricos.

Este trabajo científico se ha desarrollado en el marco de dos iniciativas europeas de investigación e innovación. Por un lado, el proyecto IDIWATER, liderado por el ITC en la región macaronésica y cofinanciado al 85 % por el programa europeo Interreg MAC 2021-2027, a través del Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER). Por otro, el proyecto SOL2H2O, una iniciativa de colaboración entre universidades y centros de investigación de Portugal, Italia y España -entre ellos el ITC- orientado a reforzar las capacidades científicas y tecnológicas para optimizar la eficiencia y sostenibilidad en la industria del agua, financiado al 100% por la Comisión Europea a través de Horizon Europe, dentro de la línea Widening.

Con esta nueva publicación científica, el Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias contribuye a la generación de conocimiento aplicado al ciclo industrial del agua y, en particular, en el desarrollo de soluciones tecnológicas orientadas a mejorar la sostenibilidad de la desalación de agua de mar.
