La reciente puesta en marcha en las instalaciones del ITC en Pozo Izquierdo de la primera planta de concentradores solares cilindro-parabólicos de Canarias que genera vapor a altas temperaturas, ha sido el marco demostrativo de la jornada técnica para dar a conocer las aplicaciones de esta tecnología en la industria local


El Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias pone en marcha la primera planta de captadores solares de concentración cilindro-parabólicos para la generación de vapor y agua caliente presurizada en Canarias. La instalación tiene carácter demostrativo y permitirá visibilizar el potencial de integración de las tecnologías solares de concentración solar térmica en la industria para descarbonizar la economía, reducir la dependencia del sector frente al incremento de los costes energéticos, asegurar la producción y aumentar su competitividad.

La producción del sistema, de 48,6 kW de potencia y ubicado en las instalaciones del ITC de Pozo izquierdo, se destina a la generación de vapor solar a 4 bar y agua caliente presurizada a 150ºC que se envían al módulo de demanda de calor industrial diseñado para evaluar el rendimiento y operatividad de la planta. La instalación consta de 16 captadores solares cilindro-parabólicos modelo T160 del fabricante Absolicon que suponen un campo solar de 88,2 m² de superficie de apertura, dispuestos en 4 filas paralelas en configuración Norte-Sur. Son equipos de concentración de foco lineal que están formados por reflectores de sección transversal parabólica que concentran la radiación solar que incide sobre su superficie de apertura de forma paralela al eje sobre un absorbedor o tubo receptor ubicado en el foco de la parábola. Los equipos cuentan con un sistema de seguimiento solar con algoritmo de inteligencia artificial que determina la posición óptima de la parábola reflectante y posiciona el equipo para maximizar la concentración de  radiación solar sobre el absorbedor. La energía solar es de esta manera transferida al fluido caloportador (agua) que circula a través del absorbedor y fluye hacia los intercambiadores de calor de los módulos de generación de vapor y producción de agua caliente. La configuración modular de los equipos permite que la planta sea fácilmente escalable a potencias de generación superiores.

La planta está equipada con sensores de medida de temperatura, presión, caudal, radiación solar, temperatura ambiente, humedad relativa y velocidad del viento así como con sistemas activos de autoprotección de los equipos y dispositivos de control que permiten la evaluación de la producción de la planta y la configuración de distintos modos de operación del campo solar.

El ITC monitorizará a lo largo del próximo año los resultados de producción del sistema y la durabilidad de los materiales constructivos lo que permitirá optimizar la operación de la planta de generación solar, facilitando la replicación del sistema en los proyectos de integración de calor solar en la industria local. La puesta en marcha de la instalación demostrativa en las instalaciones del ITC de Pozo Izquierdo va a permitir hacer una evaluación precisa de los puntos críticos del sistema en condiciones climáticas muy agresivas debido a la proximidad del mar y a la existencia de vientos constantes de elevada intensidad que confieren un ambiente salino y altamente corrosivo al área donde se ubica la planta de generación.

La instalación y operación de la planta es una de las actividades que se enmarcan en el proyecto europeo de cooperación interregional ACLIEMAC (Adaptación al cambio climático de los sistemas energéticos de la Macaronesia), cofinanciado por el programa Interreg MAC 2014-2020.

Sistemas SHIP

Las instalaciones de generación de calor solar para procesos industriales o SHIP (del inglés Solar Heat for Industrial Processes), son sistemas que transforman la radiación solar y la convierten en energía térmica para procesos productivos de diversos sectores industriales. Son una de las aplicaciones más interesantes para la utilización de la energía solar térmica, siendo las temperaturas de los procesos industriales las que determinan en cada caso la tecnología de captadores solares a utilizar. Los captadores solares son dispositivos capaces de absorber la energía emitida por el Sol que transportan las ondas electromagnéticas y transformarla en calor. La energía es transferida a un fluido caloportador, agua, aceite térmico o vapor, que aumenta su temperatura y puede ser utilizado directamente, como ocurre con las instalaciones solares de producción de agua caliente para uso doméstico y en los procesos de inyección directa de vapor o de forma indirecta intercambiando la energía térmica que transporta a otros procesos.

Las temperaturas de los procesos productivos propios de cada actividad industrial son múltiples y se extienden en el rango de baja temperatura (T < 100ºC), media temperatura (100ºC < T < 400ºC) y alta temperatura de operación (T > 400ºC). Los procesos de baja y media temperatura suponen la mayor cuota del consumo energético de calor en las industrias alimentarias y de bebidas, la minería, la industria del papel y la del tabaco. Los procesos que requieren altas temperaturas de operación están presentes en sectores como el de la industria química, el de producción y transformación de metales o el de la producción de minerales no metálicos.

La importancia de las plantas SHIP reside en que permiten reducir la dependencia del sector industrial de los combustibles fósiles y aprovechar los recursos locales, lo que implica reducir la vulnerabilidad de la economía y las emisiones de CO2 propias de la  actividad industrial, aportando una mayor competitividad frente al resto de industrias en el sector.

La madurez tecnológica alcanzada en los últimos años por los sistemas de concentración solar para la generación de calor, con dispositivos específicos para su integración en la industria como los captadores solares lineales tipo Fresnel y los captadores solares cilindro-parabólicos de reducido tamaño hacen viable la implantación de estos sistemas en el sector industrial.

La generación de calor solar industrial requiere el empleo de soluciones tecnológicas robustas y seguras, adecuadas para funcionar con fiabilidad en las exigentes condiciones de operación de la industria, con especial atención a las posibles condiciones de estancamiento y sobre temperatura. Estas soluciones deben ser modulares y de fácil y rápida instalación con requisitos de operación y mantenimiento accesibles para personal técnico sin formación específica en tecnologías solares. Es necesario además optimizar la integración de las tecnologías solares en los procesos, bien a nivel de la generación de calor o de la demanda de calor, de forma que no interfieran en los procedimientos de operación ya existentes y no se requieran esfuerzos adicionales en los procedimientos de seguridad o en la modificación/instalación de circuitos hidráulicos. La puesta en marcha de esta instalación SHIP en Canarias permitirá la evaluación precisa de los puntos críticos de este tipo de instalaciones y dará visibilidad a las tecnologías solares de concentración y a su capacidad para proveer la demanda energética requerida en el sector industrial.
