The Main objective of FORWARD project is to improve excellence in research and innovation potential of the European Outermost Regions (OR) to strengthen their participation in research and innovation projects financed by the EU and link the research activities to territorial development. Based on a multiple actor, multidiscipline and intersectorial perspective, the aim of the project is to facilitate the collaboration and creation of networks among representatives of the quadruple helix stakeholders (university, SME, government, civil society) at regional level among the OR and with their EU Member State counterparts and those of third countries at international level.

Main objective: 

Improve excellence in research and innovative potential of the OR enabling them to improve their participation in support programmes funded by the EU

Specific objectives:

  • Map the OR research and innovation ecosystems to underline the strengths, weaknesses and growth potentials of each OR
  • Identify current and future excellence fields likewise the competitive advantages of the different regions and define the emerging areas of specialisation per OR and define the OR friendly topics in future Framework Programmes
  • Characterise OR participation barriers in H2020
  • Accompany the transformation and development of each OR ecosystem research and innovation capacities to exploit their potentials better
  • Support the formulation of interactive action plans based on research with long-term perspectives
  • Increase regional, national, European and global visibility of the OR research activities and capacities in their areas of specialisation
  • Foster constitution of a critical OR research mass via networks, exchanges and consortiums with regional, national, European and global research centres
  • Design and experiment effective tools to overcome existing barriers and support OR involvement in Horizonte 2020 and the future framework
  • Foster the socio-economic development of European OR via the quadruple helix focus
  • Foster the OR geographical integration within the EU and towards third countries
