Numerous examples show the fragility of the water-energy binomial in the Atlantic Space. Investments to increase contribution to renewable energies (RES) have not managed to reduce either costs or emissions. EERES4WATER  focuses on making visible the best binomial inter-relation and provides sustainable intelligent integrating measures towards direct RES use and energy efficiency in the integral water cycle, with an integrator vision of the EU2020 strategy.

EERES4WATER  improves the institutional social and technical framework to promote direct use of renewable energy sources (RES) and energy efficiency in the water cycle to influence related policies and the introduction of new processes and technologies. These improvements will place the Atlantic Area in the avant-garde of RES policies, strategies, energy efficiency, likewise sustainability. These are essential for resource efficiency in the Energy-Water nexus.

Main objective:

The main goal is to provide different perspectives to foster direct use of RES and reduce energy consumption related to drinking water production, treatment of waste water, use of industrial water and agricultural irrigation. Water management requires an increase in energy resources for extraction, distribution, purification, waste water treatments, desalination and more recently advanced treatments to obtain regenerated water. Historically, energy and water interactions (Nexus) were considered regionally or technology by technology. Therefore, in depth knowledge of the Nexus and development of local policies, strategies and tools specifically for water treatments to reduce energy needs or foster the use of RES acquire a new strategic aspect. In other words, it is time for a more integrated perspective to tackle the Nexus challenges and opportunities.

Specific objectives:

The project seeks the improvement of energy self-sufficiency in the water cycle as a key sustainability factor and energy efficiency (EE) by strategically integrating existing technology, modelling and data work. To this effect, the project plans to:

  • Identify the strategic policy framework required in the Atlantic Area to foster appropriate extensive EE and RES use in water treatment and distribution installations.
  • Combine complementary industrial and technical capacities to drive and improve deployment of EE and RES technologies to optimise water manager, treatment, distribution and end use systems.
