Software platform of sustainable development of applications for virtual medical simulation.

Description

This technology covers the area of virtual medical simulation in minimally-invasive health techniques, with techniques being understood to include both the surgical and the diagnostic.

In order to be able to carry out our proposal we suggest a methodology based on four axes:

  • Development with a free software philosophy. This will allow us to gain support from the community of users and developers of basic packages for development, and the power of communal cooperation.
  • Efficient interactive visualization. This will allow us to explore the visualization model of the high-performance graphics cards (GPGPU), which is possible thanks to the great advances which have arisen in this field over the last few years. 
  • Universality of the hardware devices (haptics). Currently the ITC has access to a wide range of man-machine interaction systems (haptics). These systems have an open API which permits the integration of the software applications with the hardware.
  • Cooperation. We understand that this is a fundamental aspect of any technological project. In a globalised world, work isolated from other companies and institutions means too great an effort. There is the intention of establishing cooperation relationships with large companies in the sector (not in order to compete with them but to ally ourselves) and to bring our development model closer to technological services required by clinical material supply companies (prosthesis, specific instrumentation, etc.) which require training for their products.

  • Identification of new activities of R+D+I in the sphere of virtual medical simulation.
  • New products and services coming onto the market, through the development of applications based on the simulation platform.

Platform of development based on the VTK visualization package.

  • Implemented in C++.
  • Access by means of interpreted languages: Tcl, Python, Java.
  • Modular architecture modular which makes possible the extension/ complement of the platform.
  • Integration of techniques of GPU computation for the calculation of strain on tissues.

Transfer / Commercialization

We expect to obtain as a result of the project a platform for development of applications of virtual medical simulation which will permit us both to complement the training service based on medical technology and the development of applications which cover the need of our collaborators. As this is a product developed with free software and with a GPL licence, the transfer/ marketing will be carried out by means of the provision of a service of development/ support for specific applications.
