Hospital device for the administration of enemas - NMA

New system to solve the problems associated with chronic constipation and faecal impaction both in the hospital environment and for domestic use.

Description

The device for the administration of enemas (NMA) is a system invented by Dr. Juan Cabrera (Faculty of Medicine of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) and designed by the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC), under the collaboration agreement signed by the ITC and the Illustrious Official College of Doctors of Las Palmas.
The current systems to administer enemas do not always ensure the sufficient pressure and the proper temperature to satisfactorily solve the problems deriving from chronic constipation and faecal impaction. With the intention of solving these problems, two devices have been developed; one for the administration of enemas in a hospital environment (NMA-HOSPITAL), which supplies water at a controlled temperature and pressure, as well as another which is much more basic for domestic use (NMA-HOME).
The NMA-HOSPITAL system consists of an easily transportable structure within the hospital environment, which has a reservoir which can be filled with water taken from any tap in the hospital and can be emptied without risk of overturning, with a storage capacity of 20 litres and thermally insulated. The device has a system of control and regulation of the water temperature, and the effective pressure necessary for its proper operation is achieved by using a peristaltic pump.
The NMA-HOME system consists of a silicone bag designed in such way that the same weight of the contained water exerts an additional pressure to the potential energy used normally as a principle propellant in conventional systems. The amount of water introduced represents in such device the parameter control of desired pressure; how much more water, greater pressure. The system can be disposable, which avoids the need for cleaning, and presents a way of using very simple.

Potential Benefits and Uses

This is a new device which attempts to solve the problems associated with chronic constipation and faecal impaction both in the hospital environment and in domestic use (more basic model) in a simple, effective and inexpensive way.

Transfer / Commercialization

Currently, the prototype is being evaluated in the Dr. Negrín hospital environment.
