Control and evaluation of the quality of water

Projects devoted to improve the water quality in general (mains, coastal, waste, brine).

Description

The ITC leads and takes part in large European and regional projects, in cooperation with private companies and other research organisations, in the subjects of desalination with renewable energies, decentralised water treatment and the evaluation and monitoring of the waters quality. It also cooperates transnationally in initiatives related to drinking water and energy supply to isolated areas, the sustainable management of water, treatment and productive use of waste water and the evaluation and protection of the quality of water.

Water is a widely used resource for a multitude of different uses, so the final use will determine the required quality. The compendium of the current regulations, as the European Framework Directive on Water, the traditional uses, the new artificial resources, the use of treatment technologies as well as the risk of contamination due to natural or man-made phenomena, makes that characterising and monitoring water is a necessary activity from the health, environmental, scientific and technical point of view.

The Canary Islands, where there are waters of different nature and origin, and where living is surrounded by the sea, are an excellent laboratory to develop initiatives where the control and evaluation of the quality of water, as well as the evaluation of the efficiencies of the multiple technologies for its treatment, are of vital importance for industry, the service sector, including tourism, the environment and society in general. For all these reasons, within the activity that is undertaken in the matter of water quality, the following actions, among others, are carried out: projects devoted to improving water quality from desalination, improvement water quality in coastal areas (CARMAC project) and preventing phenomena of pollution by waste water (COFARCAN project) and/or brine disposal (MEVESIAC project) and implanting systems of management and improvement of urban waste waters quality, evaluating treatment technologies for this purpose (TECOWATER project).
More precisely, efforts are focused on the following areas of interest:
• Control and evaluation of the physical-chemical and microbiological quality of desalinated water, mains water, seawater and regenerated waters for re-use.
• Analysis and search for solutions in view of the risks of contamination caused by rejected flow disposal from desalination plants, purified waters and industrial activities.

In order to carry out the activities planned in the different projects, there is an analytical laboratory provided with high-level scientific instrumentation. The analytical methods for the detection and quantification, both of basic physical-chemical and micro-biological parameters, and of contaminants for the different waters analysed, are fine-tuned.
